“My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?”
[Galatians 5:16-18 (MSG)]
At the end of Self, begins Spirit.
In the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, God used a small boy’s lunch to do the miraculous. Was he really the only person with food in that crowd? We don’t know, but out of thousands, only one little kid was bold and selfless enough to offer up his lunch to be used by Jesus. When the boy gave what little he had, God was able to do something so big that it reverberated for generations. Out of a child’s selflessness God did the miraculous.
In another story there was a widow who offered up her last bit of oil to Elijah. As she poured out what she had left, God’s endless oil began to flow. Because she was willing to give even what little she had, a miracle happened. The principle here is the same as the story of the small boy’s lunch. When we give our best, God does the rest. When we’ve done the faithful part – we can count on God to do the eternal part. Today, take what you’ve got and give it to God. He will do more with your lack than you could out of your overflow.
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
[2 Cor. 12:9]
When we get to end of ourselves, that’s when He can step in and do something miraculous.
