A Gentle Whisper

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. –1 Kings 19:11-13

These tragedies: the wind storm, the earthquake, the fire, are natural disasters.

Have you ever found yourself angry or upset with God? You can’t understand why you are going through certain challenges. There may be times when we don’t understand why certain things are occurring around us, and that’s okay. Not every storm is from the Lord. Life brings challenges. Although we don’t understand, it is in the soft voice of the Lord that we find comfort and direction.

If we take a look at the life of Jesus, we see that he didn’t always have it easy. Trials came, temptation bombarded him. But it was in his constant communication with the Father that he found peace and guidance. Saying, “yet not my will, but yours.”

The Lord told Elijah to go and stand on the mountain. If you are where God has asked you to be, he will be there with you. And even though trials may come, God, in His gentle whisper, assures you that everything is going to be okay. His voice brings comfort and peace. And in the midst of chaos you feel at ease. The voice of the Lord is your umbrella in the midst of your darkest storm.

It is in the presence of the Lord that the gentle whisper will come. Are you entering into God’s presence daily? Are you following the lead of the Holy Spirit? God gives each one of us the sensitivity to hear him. It’s a fine-tuned frequency. The more you tune-in, the clearer you will hear his voice.

It is in our everyday moments that God desires for us to talk to him, to listen to him, and to stay close to him. Following the lead of his voice will cultivate a level of intimacy with your heavenly Father. He will speak. And the more you spend time with him, the more you will recognize that quiet, gentle whisper.
